Harry Plinkett’s new review and Superman’s new director UPDATE: Wolverine meets Black Swan?

I got some good news and some bad news, let’s start with the good:

Harry Plinkett has revealed which movie he will review next

If you don’t know Harry Plinkett, he’s probably the angriest scariest nerd alive.
Plinkett is a fictious (or not?) Star Wars/Star Trek fan who likes to do in-depth reviews of movies he likes and (mostly) movies he doesn’t like. From time to time he might forget to turn off his camera and we see glimpses of his not very comforting private life and then he gets back to his reviews.

His most famous (and probably best) review is the epic Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace – the ultimate destruction of Episode 1, never before has there been a longer, more detailed or better argued analysis of this trainwreck and it speaks for both the review and The Phantom Menace if the 70 minute long review is more enjoyable than the actual movie:

Now to the bad news:
Zack Snyder is going to direct Superman
Wow… just when everything looked so good.
There were some rumors that Christopher Nolan’s brother Jonathan (screenwriter of The Prestige, The Dark Knight and the upcoming Batman) would helm Superman.

While it would be unusual that one would go from writing to directing one of the biggest superheromovies, the fact that Christopher Nolan is producing Superman and David Goyer is working on the story (Goyer and the two Nolans forming the trio that brought us The Dark Knight) it seemed plausible – hell, we probably all assumed that Warner Brothers would do everything Nolan said, even if it meant appointing his brother to be director of Superman.

Then some even more awesome news came in: Darren Aronofsky, the great artist behind Requiem for a Dream, Pi and The Wrestler was in talks of directing Superman.
Fanboy dream come true? Probably, I love Aronofsky’s movies and his newest movie Black Swan is on top of my must-see list.

A guy like Aronofsky who never makes the same movie twice and is not a mainstream-director would be great choice (hey remember when that Memento guy made a Batman movie? or when that Evil Dead guy made a Spider-Man movie?)

But nope… let’s have Zack Snyder direct it…
I still hope for the best, but Snyder tried to adapt a graphic novel before and the result was a mixed bag that didn’t live up to its comic-origins. He is a director focused on stylised fight sequences and has yet to make a great movie that doesn’t rely on his slow motion/over the top violence gimmicks…

Oh, come on!!!

Now Aronofsky is in talks for X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2? Left aside that the first was a disaster and there was no need for a sequel… why? Why not take Aronofsky for Superman and let Snyder direct the X-Men.

But I think I have to salute Fox for their brilliant fanboy-catch-trickery:

The X-Men: First Class movie (otherwise known as “hey isn’t it super-hip to make a teenager prequel?”-cashcow) sparked about as much interest by fanboys as the new Spider-Man reboot (otherwise known as “it’s Twilight with a Spider-bite in Three Deee), but they hired Matthew Vaughn to direct it.

Vaughn, who boosted his geek-credibility with Kick-Ass (he also directed Layer Cake and Stardust) now gives this movie the “Well I don’t like the idea but I like the director so I wish him the best”-factor.

Probably the same tactic is used with Aronofsky… I just hope this news will die quicker than the news that Aronofsky was in talks for Superman, seriousy…
