No holiday without the Bat!
While I love Christopher Nolan’s current Batman interpretation, classics are always welcome. For some reason Batman Returns is considered to be a “lesser” movie by the fan crowd and also a big part of the movie going public, but to me it is quite the opposite.
After Batman 1989 Warner Brothers was desperate to get Tim Burton back to direct the second Batman installment. When he didn’t want to they offered him complete creative freedom…
Which resulted in one of my favorite Burton movies.
It is important to note: This is not a Batman movie, this is a Tim Burton movie featuring some characters that resemble a comic character named Batman.
What Batman Returns is, is a tragic Christmas fairytale about 3 outcasts of society, portrayed as three different dark animals. It is a story about corruption, the masks that protect or portray our inner desires and fears, a love story albeit a tragic one.
A tale of evil and not-so evil, insanity and the greed for power – all set in one of the darkest Christmas settings you will ever find.
