The battle for the Throne – Game of Thrones coverage

A Lannister always pays his debts

Game of Thrones returns for its third season – and if you ask anyone who has read the books they will swear that the third book A Storm of Swords is the most action packed story with a lot of twists waiting for us. It is because of this super-dense plot that the third book will be split into 2 seasons but the producers already stated that they stop thinking “one book per season” as they did with seasons 1 and 2.

And this year flipthetruck will closely follow each episode!

In order to combat piracy (Game of Thrones being the most pirated show of 2012) the episodes will be released in Europe just a few hours later than in the United States on Pay-TV. This is still not the same as having HBO in Europe (seriously just take my money HBO!) but we’re getting there!

Our local cinema in Vienna is even hosting a special Game of Thrones evening premiering the final 3 episodes of Season 2 (one of them being the battle of Blackwater Bay) a few days before the season premiere.

The site for the event even mockingly refers to TV being the new cinema and with the quality shows we are currently having (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Sherlock…) it is easy to see where these arguments come from. TV programs can’t scam us during the opening weekend and then run away with our cash – every episode has to hold our attention and if the quality decreases so does the viewership.

With Game of Thrones expanding its budget by 15% per episode as well as having generally a few minutes longer running time this season is shaping up to look even more impressive than the previous two.

With March and April being generally the slower months when it comes to movies (with the Oscar season over and things like Hansel and Gretel: Witchhunters being promoted as “blockbusters”) the start of a TV show is a welcome distraction.

I will cover the 10 episodes hopefully on a weekly basis but delays are inevitable due to holiday trips, laziness and mandatory therapy. Still I will try to be as up to date as possible.

In the meantime pass the final days until the season premiere with some pretty damn good looking trailers:

Who lives who dies?

The struggle for the Iron Throne continues on March 31st and in the end the Starks are always right:

Winter is coming…
