   you're next banner

You’re Next invites us to join a family meeting and leads us through the very tense relationships between the ten characters before all hell breaks loose. When a killer armed with a crossbow attacks a tight slasher starts and before we know it the film effortlessly changes the tone and we are left with one of the most entertaining slashers in years.

 Gravity 2

When a storm of debries from a shot down satellite surprises a shuttle from the ISS (International Space Station) the surviving astronauts Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) must fight to stay alive and make it back to safety in one piece.

Cuarón returns
It has been seven years since Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men – a brilliant and layered science fiction film weaving social and polticial commentary together with fantastic characters and staggering images.

Seven years is an awfully long time for a director to follow this movie whose critical praise has only increased since then. The obvious question is was it worth the wait?

despicable me 2 banner

Despicable Me 2 is the sequel to the surprise hit Despicable Me which told the story of supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) who had debts at the bank of evil and tried to get some respect by stealing the moon.

But if you have seen the trailers you won’t be surprised to find out that the movie isn’t really interested in continuing the story of the characters. The yellow minions were front and center in all the trailers.Very similar to Ice Age 2 the movie expands on the things that people loved from part 1 while doing little with the other characters.

monsters university banner

With 2 sequels to Toy Story and one unwanted sequel to Cars Pixar was no longer delivering one original movie after the other. Last year they returned to original territory with Brave with mixed results.

While I really enjoyed Brave as a kids’ movie it had notable flaws that previous Pixar tales had not. So when a prequel to Monsters Inc. was announced my expectations were modest at best.

Would Monsters University be the final confirmation that Pixar had lost its mojo?

Into Darkness Banner

Being the sequel to a super fast paced reboot Star Trek Into Darkness wastes no time and throws us right into an Indiana Jones inspired opening. While Kirk (Chris Pine) and Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) have to distract the natives Spock (Zachary Quinto) has to stop a volcano from destroying this civilization. The high adrenaline opening culminates into a situation where Kirk violates the prime directive which forbids interference in lesser developed cultures.

His actions save the day but also make the primitive species worship the Enterprise as a symbol of some godly interference.

It is after this action sequence and the comedic payoff that the title card appears and the movie literally descends into darkness with a moody introduction of the mysterious villain John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch).
