Der kostümaffine Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) versucht sich in Pan an einer Originstory des bekannten fliegenden Kindes, das nie erwachsen werden wollte. Helfen soll ihm dabei eine starke Besetzung inklusive Hugh Jackman und Rooney Mara, doch nicht einmal das hilft wirklich.

Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight) bringt uns einen neuen Science Fiction Blockbuster, in dem Cooper (Matthew McConnaughey) und ein Team von Astronauten sich durch ein Wurmloch in eine neue Galaxie begeben, um ein neues Zuhause für die menschliche Spezies zu finden.

In 2011 20th Century Fox managed a feat few thought possible: they rebooted the Planet of the Apes Franchise with a prequel that stood on its own avoiding typical prequel pitfalls. Directed by Rupert Wyatt Rise of the Planet of the Apes allowed for a whole new generation to be drawn into a now eight movie franchise which has had its origins in the book La Planète des Singes (1963) by Pierre Boule.

3 years later a new director – Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) – is giving us a sequel focusing on the chimpanzee Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his group of hyper-intelligent apes who are trying to build themselves a homestead 10 years after a deadly virus has wiped out most of humanity. But when a group of humans stumbles into Caesar’s territory the conflict is imminent.

Ridley Scott has returned to the Alien franchise after a long string of not so exciting projects. With Prometheus interviews and trailers there is the promise of a return to science fiction in the vein of Blade Runner and the original Alien.

Last week I went into a screening of John Carter (previously titled John Carter of Mars) and thankfully I only paid 7.5 € instead of 12 € for the Austrian excuse for an Imax screening. John Carter is a massive 250 million dollars undertaking – intended to become a new franchise. Directed by Andrew Stanton (writer: Toy Story 1-3, Monsters Inc., writer/director: Finding Nemo, A Bug’s Life, Wall-E) there is a fair deal of talent behind this project. The question was if it has paid off…
